Orphan Black: You Should Be Watching This Show

By Cara

To tell you the truth, I was not looking to add another new show to my ever growing list of television obligations.  But I swear to you, when BBC America pulls you in, there’s very little you can do to stop it from happening.  That’s how I started on Orphan Black, a fun little drama about a girl and her many clones.  We’re heading into the first season finale, and the performance(s) by Tatiana Maslany have been Emmy-worthy.  It’s a feast for the eyes to see all the different characters she can be and then to see them interact with one another.

Top of the Lake

Top of the LakeBy Cara

I had heard about this miniseries through the AV Club’s TV website.  Mistakenly, I came in at episode 4, which was both dumb and annoying.  I quickly rectified that and am now caught up on all aired episodes.  Elisabeth Moss (of Mad Men fame but since I don’t watch Mad Men, I’m going to say she’s of West Wing fame) is an Australian police detective named Robin who is home in New Zealand while her mom undergoes cancer treatment.  While she’s there, she is called in by the local police to investigate the possible pregnancy of a 12-year-old girl, Tui Mitcham.  Tui won’t tell Robin who the father could be, and within a few days, Tui disappears from the area, leaving behind the horse she was riding on.

10 Reasons Why Keri Russell Kicks Ass

By Cara

  1. The Americans.  Now I have to admit, the show is no Homeland, but the Russian spy thing is growing on me, primarily due to Russell’s portrayal of Elizabeth.  I don’t think I’d still be watching otherwise (honestly, Matthew Rhys is good, but no one is really watching for him).  And she continues to kick Granny’s (Margo Martindale’s Claudia) ass and pierce her daughter’s ears with a needle at midnight, while falling in and out of love with her spy partner/husband on a weekly basis.

10 Reasons to Watch The Lizzie Bennet Diaries — Right Now!

By Cara

I stumbled upon this web series mid-2012 on The Hairpin’s recommendation.  I have been a lover of Jane Austen (or “JA”) books, but especially of Pride & Prejudice (“P&P”), since that time we were forced to read it back in the 11th grade.  I’ve kept up with all things JA and P&P in various forms, but mostly fan fiction boards.  At one time, I even tried to adapt P&P to the modern day (I don’t think I made it passed the fifth chapter).  Others have done it successfully — in writing — but the Lizzie Bennet Diaries is the first time anyone attempted to do a modern-day adaptation on screen (okay, that’s not exactly true, we can’t forget about Bridget Jones’ Diary). Cybergeddon

By Cara

I’ve recently embraced online web series as a way to pass the time when there’s nothing on television, which is actually more often than you realize.  I found out about the web series Cybergeddon during the Streamy Awards, where Missy Peregrym won for Best Female Performance in a Drama.  She’s the only reason I watch ABC’s Rookie Blue in the off-season (read: summer, when there’s really nothing on TV).  So I gave Cybergeddon a chance because she’s kick-ass, and would never steer me wrong. Thoughts from a Veronica Mars FanGirl

By Cara

I didn’t want my first post to be something akin to ‘omg, I’m an obsessed Veronica Mars fangirl!!!’ — but here I am, admitting to being an obsessed Veronica Mars fangirl. Yes, that’s me, watching reruns on SOAPNet on Saturday afternoons even though I own the DVDs and feel ambivalent about the third (and last) season. Maybe I secretly hoped that in some way, somehow it would come back and resolve itself, nicely wrapped up in a big, red bow. Continue reading
